Ben Hackett
Ben has 50 years of experience in the maritime and transportation industry including business development, economic analysis, marketing and management. He was formerly Executive Managing Director, International Consulting, with Global Insight, Inc.,where he headed the Global Transportation Practice. Prior to Global Insight, he directed the Trade and Transportation Group at DRI McGraw-Hill where he was also Director of the World Sea Trade Service. Ben was responsible for managing the international trade capital base and leading as Project Director on key maritime, waterway and transportation-related consulting projects. Contacts were maintained with government departments worldwide, port authorities, ship builders, shipping companies and other intermodal transport operators. In this capacity, he was responsible for advising global clients on strategic issues for policy and investment and growth strategy decisions. Prior to this he was head of the Lloyd's Maritime Information Services consulting division (Shipping Economics Advisory Group). In this capacity he re-positioned the Group, building a significant practice as well as contributing to the development of a number of key shipping industry databases and models in such diverse areas as energy, liner shipping, bulk shipping, and national defense.

Ben has worked closely with a number of governments and institutions in the U.S and abroad, including The World Bank, the IFC, the European Union, NATO, Italy, Russia, Poland, Singapore, Malaysia, Panama, Ecuador, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Colombia, Panama, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, the UAE, Qatar, Germany, the Netherlands, the Republic of Georgia, and Egypt to advise on strategic development plans and market positioning. ​​

Led the development of the North America and North Europe editions of the Global Port Tracker reports and authored the editorials for every issue. Continues to oversee the production of the North America report

Project Director for the Hong Kong Competition Commission to assess the proposed operational consolidation of the three major terminals at the port.

Project Manager on a study for the Promotion of Regional Economic Integration by Developing APEC Gateway Port Connectivity, for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation organization. The study provided an understanding of gateway ports and their ability to facilitate trade, economic growth and improved connectivity at various levels.

Project Director for Commodity and Trade Route Database/Forecast produced for U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration. The database and forecast tracked container imports and exports at the 20 largest U.S. ports, broken down by 12 trade routes and 14 commodity groups and was used to produce quarterly reports for seven years.
