Daniel Hackett, AICP

Daniel is a subject matter expert with over 25 years of experience in trade and transportation, specializing in maritime analytics, port productivity, and cargo forecasting. He produces the monthly Global Port Tracker report and his advisory work spans the full spectrum of the supply chain, providing insight and analysis to federal agencies including BTS and MARAD, major North American ports and terminal operators, Class I railroads, and commercial real estate firms.

Daniel is a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners, and he is active at the National Academies’ Transportation Research Board (TRB) where he is a member of the Freight Economics and Supply Chains committee and is the former Chair of both the International Trade and Transportation Committee and the Port Performance subcommittee.

​Key Accomplishments

​

  • Developed and produces the port-level model used in the Global Port Tracker: North America Trade Outlook, a monthly report for the maritime and logistics industry, and developed the region-level model used in the monthly Global Port Tracker: North Europe Trade Outlook. 

​​

  • Key member of the team that developed the 2025 comprehensive long-range cargo forecast for the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, with separate forecasts for inbound and outbound containerized cargo, dry bulk cargo, liquid bulk cargo, and general cargo. 

​​

  • Served as a Subject Matter Expert between 2016 and 2021 for the U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics’ Port Performance Freight Statistics Program. 

​

  • Developed and maintained a Commodity and Trade Route database/forecast used to produce quarterly reports for the U.S. Maritime Administration for seven years. The reports projected and analyzed container imports and exports at the 20 largest U.S. ports, with trade volumes broken down by 12 trade routes and by 14 commodity groups, presented in both TEUs and tons.

  • Speaker at multiple conferences and events in the U.S. and Canada including the Journal of Commerce’s Port Performance North America, Inland Distribution, Gulf Shipping, and Cool Cargoes conferences; Houston International Maritime Conference; Cargo Logistics Canada’s North America Multimodal Supply Chain Expo; Stifel Bank’s Transportation & Logistics Conference; the Annual Meeting of the National Association of Business Economics; the American Association of Port Authorities; the North Atlantic Ports Association; and the International Propellor Club’s Convention. Participated in multiple webinars/interviews/briefing calls, including for the Port of Los Angeles, Fox Business, Bank of America, the National Association of Business Economics, and the Journal of Commerce.

  • Co-authored “Multi-perspective Analysis of Pandemic Impacts on U.S. Import Trade” in the Transportation Research Record (Volume 2677 Issue 2, February 2023).
